Primary source: Microsoft fiscal Q4 2026 earnings release · Released · Quarter ended June 30, 2026. This is analysis of that dated release; review subsequent filings for later changes.
Your starting point: Keep GAAP, adjusted and forecast earnings separate. An excluded investment effect changes the earnings comparison without changing the reported operating-income line.
What Microsoft reported
Microsoft's July 29, 2026 release covers the quarter ended June 30. It reports revenue and operating-income growth of 18% year over year, while net-income and EPS growth differ between GAAP and non-GAAP presentations.
The release says its non-GAAP presentation excludes investment effects related to OpenAI, with a reconciliation. Those are reported accounting distinctions, not evidence that one presentation is universally the better earnings measure.
Why the earnings basis matters
A comparison becomes unclear if this quarter's adjusted EPS is paired with last year's reported EPS. Use the same definition in both periods and keep the issuer's explanation of exclusions attached to the figures.
Our research question is whether the operating result supports the broader earnings narrative. Operating income, net income and per-share income answer related questions at different stages of the statement. A share-count change can add another difference.
The strongest counterargument
An adjusted presentation may help isolate operating trends, but removing an item does not make it economically irrelevant. The investment relationship and its risks still belong in a complete company review.
Conversely, a strong reported net-income growth rate need not imply equivalent growth in the recurring operating business. Review both presentations and the reconciliation instead of letting the preferred narrative decide which evidence counts.
What to research next
Open MSFT, inspect Financials and identify the basis of available valuation inputs. Follow the primary release's non-GAAP section and compare its earnings bridge with the filing. A chart cannot explain every adjustment.
Use the EPS checklist and the trailing-versus-forward P/E guide. Keep this July release separate from later developments and forecasts; this note does not calculate a current price target.
