How to build a research watchlist

Research a company

A research watchlist gives unanswered company questions a place to wait. Start with businesses you want to understand, then decide what evidence each review needs.

By ScalarQuant · Published · Updated

Open the app, choose Watchlist, then Add company. You can use guest company research; AI research requires sign-in.

Your starting point: Track a company because you have a clear question about it. A watchlist entry records interest, not an instruction to buy.

Give each company a research question

Useful questions name a measure and a source: “Is revenue growing while operating margin stays stable?” or “When does the company's largest debt payment fall due?” A question about price movement alone does not explain the business.

Choose a review event such as the next quarterly filing, a new earnings release or a disclosed financing change. This is a process you manage, not an automated alert promised by the app. The SEC's filing guide explains the reports you can use as checkpoints.

Keep the initial list small enough that you can read the evidence. More symbols increase your review workload; they do not automatically add useful information or portfolio diversification.

Add a company in ScalarQuant

  1. Open ScalarQuant and choose Watchlist in the app navigation.
  2. Select Add company. Search by company name or ticker and confirm the intended result.
  3. Select the result. The app shows “Adding company…” while saving; an error needs attention before you assume it is saved.
  4. Check the company under Tracked companies, then open its row to view company details.

You can also search from the app and use the company's watch control. GOOGL, for example, identifies one Alphabet share class; GOOG is another. This is a navigation example, not a preference for either investment. Confirm the exact security rather than relying on a familiar company name.

Guest lists belong to that browser's guest session. Sign in when you need the account workflow, and review any guest-data transfer choice shown. Guest storage should not be treated as a broker record or a backup.

Keep a simple review worksheet

Keep this worksheet in your own notes. The current Watchlist stores tickers and displays available quotes; it does not offer these worksheet fields. The thesis guide shows how to expand a question once you have supporting evidence.

Review the evidence, not only the quote

Open the company and review Financials, the reporting periods and recent news. A quote or sparkline can tell you price changed; it cannot establish the reason. Follow the original filing or issuer release for a material business claim.

After each review, record what changed, what remains unknown and why the company stays on your list. Comparing peers is easier when you use the same periods and business scope.

A watched company is separate from a portfolio holding. Only add a position when you can enter the shares and cost you actually want to track. Watching several companies in one theme does not establish that owning them would spread your risk.

Create one useful watchlist entry

Open ScalarQuant, choose Watchlist and Add company, then confirm the company and ticker. Keep one dated question in your own notes and use it when you open the company details.
